Good day!
It is the Monday before Election Day 2020 – a day that once felt as far as Greenland or Saturn, but only because there was a global pandemic that set in. We arrive on this day with a new Supreme Court Justice who probably enjoys long walks on the beach and monochromatic wardrobes from the 50s. She definitely dislikes women’s rights and La Croix. (It’s the bubbles. I get it.) Yet, here we are.
We arrive together with a pit in our stomach knowing there is a door before us that holds both the known and unknown. John Mulaney got a lot of flack for his SNL monologue this weekend when he talked about how not much will change, no matter who wins:
“But just rest assured, no matter what happens, nothing much will change in the United States. The rich will continue to prosper while the poor languish. Families will be upended by mental illness and drug addiction. Jane Lynch will continue to book lots of projects.”
Sure, a funny and wealthy guy on these matters still feels rather empty, but I get his point. Our smaller worlds will continue turning and changing. Sister Moon and Brother Sun will continue their habitual routine of keeping us rising and falling with them. This, though, does not diminish the fact that so much still rests on the line of what is and what could be. We can acknowledge that children still remain locked in cages without their parents; police act in a manner of complete disregard for Black and Brown bodies and do so without having to answer for it; and the rights of LGBTQ+ communities and women hang in the balance.
As we hold these two contrasting worlds of personal and communal, I am, admittedly, nervously holding it all close. After 2016, my expectations are so low. Yet, I hold out for hope toward every single seed that has been planted so far. Something I am reminded of often is knowing the work I put it yesterday, today, or tomorrow may not flourish in my lifetime … however, it will one day. So, if there are any grand thoughts I can leave you with today, it’s to keep planting your seeds, let the Sun and Moon remind you another day is ahead, eat your vegetables, and do not, whatever you do, let the existence of hate permeate any part of yourself.
Q for U: How are you going to take care of yourself today?
