Our Tiny & Mighty Torch

Previously posted on TinyLetter

To my favorite Elves –

Would I be remiss in my confession to you that I kind of forgot Christmas is soon? Between the unpacking of boxes, balancing work and parenthood, and remembering to shower — I feel like I lost an entire month. The kind of month that sprouts a tickle in your heart for chilly weather, a hot drink, and a favorite scarf. It could also be the fact that there is a global pandemic and life, with its traditions and familiarities, has been pushed aside for things like, say, communal health and well-being. I presume it is a mix of both. What a cocktail.

Wherever you find yourself today, December 21st, and whatever tradition you may have pressed pause on, I hope there is still a tiny flame that burns within that you’re able to point to, recognize, and smile at. I feel like we have all carried these little flames around with us since March. Some may call it hope or positivity or God or all of the above, but the light it has given off has, in some way or another, brought us to today. Our tiny and mighty torches.

Today, I want to be mindful. I don’t want to unpack another box or hop on another Zoom call or think about what’s for dinner. Instead, I want to be present to what is to come even though it looks so different. I want to spend time reflecting on a surreal year; thanking it for what it has shown me about myself and my priorities and grieving the destruction we have all been witness to. I want to continue read and be fascinated by how animals begin their winter processes of collecting, harvesting, resting, waiting … how heartbeats and systems slow to near-death in order to preserve life. It is never lost on me that the creatures of the Earth pay attention to their bodies and listen.

I hope you, too, can take a pause in this way this week. I know some of us to wait and celebrate a meaningful Birth, while others respond in other ways. Whatever it looks like for you, I hope it only feeds that tiny and mighty torch you carry.
